Tate & Lyles black Treacle (454grams)16ozs is much the same as molasses or unrefined sugar syrup. Great for flavorings, cooking or baking, where you need that strong molasses toffee like taste. Can also be used in the home brewing process to darken beer.
How about this recipe for Rich Jamaican Loaf
75g(3oz) Margarine, 125g(4oz)Light brown soft sugar, 14ml(1tbsp)Lyles's Golden syrup, 15ml(1tbsp)Black treacle, 2 eggs-beaten, 225g(8oz)mashed banana, 225g(8oz)self-raising flour, 5ml(1tsp)mixed spice, 1.25ml(1/4tsp)bicarbonate of soda, 2.5ml(1/2tsp)salt, 225g(8oz)raisins, Glaze:30ml(2tbsp)warm Lyles Golden Syrup
Preheat oven to 350F. Cream the margarine and sugar together until light and fluffy. Stir in treacle and syrup. Add the eggs and banana, mix well. Sieve the flour, spice, bicarbonate of soda and salt, and add to the creamed mixture with the raisins. Place in a 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" greased and lined loaf tin. Bake in the oven for approx 1 1/2 hours or until well risen and firm to the touch. Remove loaf from the tin. Glaze top surface with Lyle's Golden Syrup - leave to cool.
